FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Kicks Off!
It's here, it's here! The 2018 edition of the most celebrated football tournament in the world - FIFA World Cup - is finally here! And this time around, it's taking place in Russia.
Like the gazillions of footy fans all over the world, I couldn't be more jazzed. And thanks to Aidilfitri, this weekend happens to be a nice, long 3-day weekend in Malaysia... so if anyone's looking for me, I'm going to be glued to my couch catching all the live action on TV.
Did you guys watch the opening ceremony? Quite glitzy, wasn't it? With Robbie Williams being Robbie Williams as usual. Then right after that, host team, Russia, kicked things off in winning style against Saudi Arabia. What a way to get the party started.
Before the tournament began, I wasn't quite sure which team to support. I've always liked Spain, but their shock early exit in the last World Cup left me feeling disappointed. France is another team that I love, so when asked who I'm supporting this year, I've said France to a few people. But after their snoozefest against Australia just now, I'm not so sure. So I may stick with Spain. Maybe. I'm not sure yet. We'll see. Speaking of Spain, I'm still buzzing from their exciting clash with Portugal last night. Well technically, it was early this morning - 2.00 a.m. Malaysian time to be exact - and I stayed up to watch it. Best match in the tournament so far and well worth staying up for. Just as expected, it was thrills and spills all the way. A classic Iberian Derby and I'm not just saying that because I like Spain. Cristiano Ronaldo happens to be my favourite football player in the world, so watching them go head-to-head was interesting to say the least. But seriously, Spain played brilliantly. Diego Costa delivered as expected, scoring a brace. That guy is a beast. No offense to Chelsea but they should've kept him. And Nacho's incredible half-volley was beyond stunning. As for Portugal, they looked stronger this time around. Fantastic to see CR7 score a hat-trick to tie things up at 3-3 (the final score of the match), but realistically speaking, he can't be their only goalscorer if they are to go far in the tournament. If he were to sustain an injury... egad! Anyway, I'll say it again - that was the most exciting match in the group fixtures so far. Imagine if it were the final. If you missed it, check out the video clip below for all six goals. Amazeballs!
I can't wait to watch all the other teams play. So many matches, so much fun!
OK, I have to go now because coming up in about ten minutes, it's Argentina vs Iceland. Should be great. Hope you guys are enjoying the matches, too. Cheers for now!
